Is Flossing Only for Preventing Cavities and Gum Disease, or Can It Also Help Prevent Cancer?

3 min read
Gum disease and Cancer

Flossing is an essential step for maintaining oral hygiene and preventing cavities and gum disease. However, recent research suggests that the benefits of good oral care may extend far beyond a healthy smile. A study published in The Lancet Oncology highlights a potential link between periodontal (gum) disease and an increased risk of cancer in men.

The Study Linking Gum Disease to Cancer Risk

The study, conducted in the United States, analyzed data from nearly 48,000 American men between the ages of 40 and 75 who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Researchers considered a range of factors, including smoking habits, diet, and periodontal health, to evaluate overall cancer risk. The findings showed that men with periodontal disease had a 14% higher risk of developing cancer compared to those without gum disease.

Increased Cancer Risks Associated with Periodontal Disease

While the total risk increase was 14%, certain types of cancer had even higher associated risks. Men with periodontal disease had a 30% or more elevated risk for specific cancers, including blood cancers like leukemia and lymphomas. The study found a significant link between gum disease and lung cancer, although this association was notably absent among non-smokers. Interestingly, even men with periodontal disease who had never smoked still faced a 35% increased risk for blood cancers and a 21% overall increased risk for cancer.

These findings suggest that gum disease may influence cancer risk independently of other lifestyle factors. Periodontal Disease & Oral Squamous Cell Cancer

How Might Gum Health Impact Cancer Risk?

The exact mechanisms are still under study, but researchers believe that chronic inflammation from gum disease could play a role in increasing cancer risk. Inflammation can create an environment where harmful bacteria and toxins circulate throughout the body, potentially affecting various organs over time. This may explain why men with periodontal disease were found to have a heightened risk for cancers, especially those associated with blood and immune health.

The Importance of Flossing and Preventive Oral Care

While the link between gum disease and cancer risk needs more research, maintaining good oral hygiene—including flossing daily—could be more important than previously understood. Flossing helps prevent plaque buildup, reduces the risk of gum inflammation, and lowers the chances of developing periodontal disease, all of which may contribute to overall health beyond just the mouth.

Although flossing alone isn’t guaranteed to prevent cancer, maintaining oral health through regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups may reduce the risk factors associated with periodontal disease, potentially lowering the likelihood of cancer. This study highlights the importance of oral health as a crucial aspect of overall wellness. So, next time you reach for the floss, remember that your commitment to oral care might just have benefits that extend beyond a bright smile.
