Can Eating More Tomatoes Help Protect Your Gums?

3 min read

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is a growing concern, particularly among older adults. If left untreated, gum disease can silently damage the gums and the bone that supports the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss, infections, and discomfort. While brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits remain the foundation of good oral health, emerging research suggests that diet may also play an important role in protecting your gums.

How a Simple Dietary Change Could Reduce Severe Gum Disease in Older Adults

Recent studies indicate that increasing the intake of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found mainly in tomatoes, may help reduce the risk of severe gum disease in older adults. Lycopene is the natural compound responsible for the bright red color of tomatoes, and it is also present in foods such as watermelon, pink grapefruit, papaya, red bell peppers, and guava. Antioxidants like lycopene help neutralize harmful molecules in the body and reduce inflammation. Because gum disease is largely driven by chronic inflammation of the gums, nutrients that help control inflammation may offer protective benefits.

Researchers analyzed the health and nutritional data of 1,227 adults between the ages of 65 and 79 in the United States, and their findings were published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. The study revealed that nearly 49 percent of older adults showed signs of gum disease, while 78 percent were not consuming enough lycopene in their diets. Most notably, individuals who consumed adequate amounts of lycopene had about one-third the risk of developing severe periodontitis compared with those who consumed lower amounts.

The researchers also observed some interesting patterns within the data. Men appeared to have a higher risk of severe gum disease compared with women. Additionally, rates of severe gum disease were higher among non-Hispanic Black adults compared with other groups. Among White adults, higher lycopene intake appeared to have a stronger protective effect, while the relationship was less clear among Black adults, suggesting that further research is needed to understand these differences.

These findings matter because severe gum disease is not just an oral health issue. Advanced periodontal disease has been associated with several serious systemic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, poor nutrition, and reduced overall quality of life. If simple dietary changes can help lower the risk, they could become an accessible and affordable preventive strategy for many people.

While the study does not prove that low lycopene levels directly cause gum disease, it strongly suggests that there may be a protective relationship. Tomatoes and tomato-based foods are widely available, affordable, and easy to incorporate into everyday meals. Interestingly, cooking tomatoes—such as in soups, sauces, and curries—can actually increase the body’s ability to absorb lycopene, making cooked tomato dishes especially beneficial.

There are many simple ways to add more lycopene-rich foods to your diet. Tomato soup, tomato-based curries, fresh tomato salads, tomato chutney, pasta sauces, watermelon slices, and guava are all easy options. Including at least one tomato-rich dish in your daily meals could help increase your lycopene intake naturally. However, it is important to remember that diet alone cannot replace good oral hygiene. Maintaining healthy gums still requires brushing twice a day, flossing daily, visiting your dentist regularly, avoiding tobacco, managing conditions like diabetes, and maintaining a balanced, nutrient-rich diet.

Overall, this research highlights how small dietary changes—such as regularly including tomato-based foods—may contribute to better gum health, particularly in older adults. Sometimes, the simplest health solutions really can begin with what is on your plate.
