How to Whiten Dentures?

Whiten Dentures

Get Rid of Those Ugly Stains on Your Dentures

After you have had your dentures for a little while, you are apt to notice that they are no longer as white as they used to be. This is in spite of the fact that you have brushed them regularly. Now you are wondering how to whiten dentures because you do not want people to notice that they are getting stained.

About Whitening Remedies

As you look around for ideas on how to whiten dentures, you need to be careful. There are many ideas floating around – but some of them will damage your dentures – even if they do get them white.

Watch Out for Bleach

The Mayo Clinic advises that you avoid denture cleaning products that have bleach in them. This is because the bleach may change the color of your dentures, weakening the pink color. If the denture cleaning solution contains chlorine, be aware that it may tarnish and corrode any metal on them.

The Clinic also advises that you avoid some other products, too. This includes whitening toothpaste because they often use peroxide as the cleaning agent, which will not do much as a denture whitener. You also want to avoid a denture cleaner that has abrasive materials in it and stiff brushes, because they can damage the surface of the dentures.

Liquids such as bleach and vinegar or other acids will make your dentures more porous over time. This will only help them absorb food dyes, making them discolored faster. Whatever cleaning agent you use, be sure to rinse it off completely before placing the false teeth back in your mouth. If not, it can cause irritation or even chemical burns. You also want to always avoid cleaning your teeth with dental solutions while your teeth are in your mouth.

Natural Denture Cleaners for Stained Dentures

Several home remedies are available that will help you keep your dentures white. Some foods have dye in them, such as grape juice, and the dyes will enter into your artificial teeth and cause them to discolor. Avoiding these foods will help them stay white. Over time, they will naturally become discolored, but some of these techniques will help.

  • Brush Your Dentures Daily

By brushing your teeth daily, this will help to remove the food particles and agents that can stain your teeth. If you do not brush often, the plaque that forms on them will turn to tartar – and tartar will stain very easily.

  • Rinse Dentures After Eating

After you have finished your meal, you can help avoid staining by taking your dentures out and rinsing them off. This is especially important if you have consumed a food or drink that is apt to stain your dentures such as berry or grape juices, wines, tomato sauces, coffee, and tea. While rinsing, avoid using hot water because this may warp your dentures.

  • Use Baking Soda

Put some baking soda in warm water. Do not use baking soda to scrub your dentures because it is apt to damage them. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes. This is especially good if you have nicotine stains. You may also want to try an effervescent denture solution, which should get rid of most stains. Before using this type of cleaner, be sure to read the package for information about how long you should leave your dentures in the solution. Most likely, you do not want to leave them in it overnight.

  • Brush Your Gums Daily

Even after you get dentures, it is just as important that you brush your gums and roof of your mouth every day. When you have dentures, it is easy to get a yeast infection in your mouth. More than half of the denture wearers have this problem. Brushing your false teeth and gums daily will help to minimize this problem.

If you are uncertain about a denture cleaning product, be sure to ask your dentist about it before using it. This will help protect your dentures and enable you to avoid possible problems.
