Be Better in Bed with Better Dental Care
Every man wants to know that he can perform well in bed. More and more men of a wide range of ages are discovering that they are having problems with erectile dysfunction (ED) and would like to have a realistic solution – quickly. The solution to improve sex life may start by looking in your mouth – at gum disease.
The Studies
A report was given recently in the Journal of Sexual Medicine of a study that revealed a connection between erectile dysfunction and gum disease. The study involved 80 men who were between 30 and 40 years old. Each of them had ED. A control group of 82 men was selected who were the same age and none of them had problems with ED. None of the men were smokers.
The study considered many factors, including their age, income, body mass, and education. After everything else was accounted for, it was found that the men with the ED problems were more than three times as likely to suffer from ED because of severe periodontitis.
In order to rule out other possible causes, all the men were roughly the same age. None of them had either diabetes or coronary artery disease. The extent of their gum disease was carefully measured.
About Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by certain bad bacteria in your mouth. There are as many as 700 different kinds of bacteria in your oral cavity and most are harmless. The bad bacteria produce acid when it comes in contact with sugar. If you do not keep up with brushing your teeth and flossing, the acid will cause cavities and inflammation of your gums in the early stages. At this stage, it is called gingivitis. The symptoms of gum disease at this stage are that you have bleeding gums when you brush or floss your teeth.
As gum disease progresses, the gums begin to pull away from your teeth. Pockets are formed on your gum line and pus may ooze out of them. Spaces will begin to form between your teeth and they will begin to get loose. Over time, some of them may even fall out. This is periodontitis and it is the primary reason today that adults are losing their teeth.
Inflammation
Along with gum disease, there is always inflammation. It is most likely the inflammation that attends gum disease that is the real culprit. Researchers have not yet made a conclusion on this because the bacteria causing gum disease is present throughout your body once it gets into your gums. However, inflammation has also been found to cause many other serious health problems including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s, several forms of cancer, and more.
Men and Periodontal Disease
More men than women are likely to have periodontal disease. Statistics show that 57 percent of men have periodontal disease, and only 38 percent of women have it.
Men with periodontal disease are also likely to have higher PSA levels. These levels are often used as an early indicator of the presence of prostate cancer. The inflammation from periodontal disease can also lead to impotence.
When it comes to other forms of cancer, men with periodontal disease are also more likely than women to develop various cancers. Your risk is 14 percent higher than men who do not have this gum disease. They are also 54 percent more likely to get pancreatic cancer, 49 percent more likely to get kidney cancer and 30 percent more likely to get cancer of the blood.
How to Improve Your Sex Life
Being a man, you naturally want to be able to have a good sex life. You do not like the idea of ED, and the thought of possible prostate cancer probably bothers you, too. If you want to improve sexual performance, and if you have gum disease, you need to get some gum disease treatment. By the way, getting rid of gum disease will also help you to have overall better breath – and possibly enable you to live longer, too.
In the above research study, half of the men with periodontitis were treated for it. As their periodontitis was treated and improved, these men also saw a reduction in their problems with ED. Similar results were discovered in other experiments, as well.
Get to the Dentist
Instead of waiting around and thinking about it, you already know you want a better sex life. ED is no fun. Letting your gum disease get worse is not a solution. Take action now. If you have mild gum disease at this point, brushing twice a day for at least two minutes, and flossing every day can get rid of it. If you have let it go and you have periodontal disease, you probably need the help of a dentist to treat it.
